It'll get you more attention and extra marks, make sure it isn't extremely long or we'll get bored and not read it. Man I've had so many of those long ass applications that I haven't commented on, jeez. If you need help what a [b]reference[/b] means then here it is: To get a [b]"reference"[/b] you have to ask a staff member if they want to help you on your application so they don't have to [b]+1[/b] on it and the people reading it know you have the [b]connections[/b] and is more likely to be a good and[b] active playe[/b]r.
